POST OPERATIVE INFORMATION-EAR SURGERY
When to call the Doctor?

If there is thick discharge from the ear.

Fever (temperature greater than 38.5 °C or 101 °F).

Persistent SEVERE ear pain.
It is normal for your ear to feel plugged after surgery.
Activity after surgery
It is normal to feel a little dizzy and sleepy following an operation.

Get up slowly after lying down to decrease dizziness.

Someone should be with you the first 24 hours after returning from the hospital.

No driving for 24 hours due to anesthesia, or if you have decreased alertness; it will be hazardous for you to drive.

NO ALCOHOL for 24 hours after surgery
Care and Cleanliness
It is normal to have some dried blood around the ear canal.

DO NOT insert any foreign objects in the ear - such as Q-tips, tissue, or finger.

Take water precautions. Wear an ear bandit, ear putty, or custom-fitted ear plugs while your tubes are in place, or until Dr. Samy gives the OK.

To shower or bath, a cotton ball dipped in petroleum jelly (Vaseline) should be placed in the outer ear area to prevent any water from entering the ear. Be sure to wash your hands before applying.
Diet

Plan to have a light meal after your surgery, then resume a normal diet

NO ALCOHOL for 24 hours after surgery
Pain Management
Pain, if you experience any, is usually mild and disappears after 24 hours.

Take Tylenol for pain medication, if necessary.
Follow-up after surgery
Dr. Samy's secretary books the surgery and follow-up at the same time. Look through your surgery papers Dr. Samy's office gave you either at your appointment or emailed to you. If lost, contact the office for a follow-up. It is essential to have a follow-up with your surgeon after surgery.
